- Senior Softball League - Call for Softball Players to form a Howe Team
-
Roger Schroder (a Howe faculty member from 1958 - 1967) is extending an invitation to Howe alums to form a senior softball team. Following is his letter:
Perhaps there are some Howe Alums who might be interested in playing. Maybe there would be enough to have a Howe team where all or most of the players would have a Howe connection. John Marshall HS has a team like this. There is a team consisting of Scecina players from Irvington.
Anyone interested should bo to the web site (indianaseniorsoftball.com or www.metrosoftballcomplex.com) or call J. Clampitt at 317-941-4113. There is a link on the website to Metro Softball Complex where we will be playing. Seniors play on Tues and/or Thurs.
It would be nice to have a Howe team in the league.
Age Divisions: 50, 55, 60, 65, 70 and 75.

Much-loved Ron Finkbiner Dies - Joins his Beloved "Gorilla"
|
Click here to read tributes to Mr. Finkbiner
On April 11, 2009, barely a year after losing his beloved "Gorilla," Ron Finkbiner, one of the most dearly loved and respected teachers in Howe's history, passed away. Ron taught history and social studies at Howe for many years during the 70s, 80s and 90s leaving Howe only when the school was forced to close. Ron's beloved wife Judy (whom he lovingly referred to as "the gorilla") passed away about a year ago and, according to friends, Ron never really recovered from that. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer that apparently spread quickly. There will be more on this website about Mr. Finkbiner. If you wish to include a story or words about Mr. Finkbiner, use the "Contact Us" link above and send me your message.
From all of us: Ron, we will truly miss you. Thanks for everything you did for all of us.

My dear sister, Jan, went to meet our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ at 10:42
this morning. She is finally at peace here on earth, and I can only imagine
the experience of being with God. Thank you so much for all of your prayers. - (Jan's sister Libby) MESSAGE FROM A FRIEND - I was blessed to reconnect with Jan at our class reunion. She commented that night she had never been able to get involved with much at Howe as she was the oldest of 9 children and had to get home to care for her siblings. Jan was a funny, scrappy gal who fought a tremendous battle against lung cancer and kidney cancer. She had unwavering faith in her doctors and her God. I thank you all for keeping her in your prayers to fight as long as she did. The doctors suspended the chemo shortly before Christmas and she was able to go home and spend the holidays with her large family.
A few of the Howe girls began having a monthly luncheon after reconnecting at the reunion and Jan was a bright spot in those meetings. She shared funny stories about her large family and gladdened our time with her. She was a gift to us all. I was truly touched by her friendship, her joy of life, and her faith in goodness and her God. Rest in peace. - Dotti

FRIENDS I REMEMBER FROM HOWE
|
|
I shall not put these in order of importance as all are important to my memory.
I have already mentioned Frank Tout, Bruce Beck and Ellen O’Drain, but their names will, no doubt, come up again.
Let me mention Pat Friedly, one of the best English teachers I ever knew. Hard working, enthusiastic, low key, and unafraid to tackle any problems or situations; that was Pat. She attracted the bright students, but handled the others with aplomb.

"Laud of the Ring"
|
Pam Chavis (shown with sons Jesse and Kyle) spent many months trying to locate the owner of a high school ring which her mother, who had recently passed away, had kept for 52 years. In the end her amazing search was successful and she happily returned the ring to its flabbergasted owner, Howe high school graduate Paul Grissom ('48).

Charles DeBow, Howe teacher, one of the original Tuskegee Airmen
|
This is a picture of the original Tuskegee airmen. It was submitted to me by Howe alumnus, James Neel from the class of 1958. James posted a message on the board asking whether a teacher who taught in the 50s at Howe named Charles DeBow might be the same Charles DeBow who was one of the original Tuskegee airmen. He and I both started researching and found that the Charles DeBow from the airmen was listed as being from Indianapolis, IN!
